This very austere work from the 16th c. by Luis de Morales seems to be depicting silence. Following the scenes of a noisy crowd sentencing Jesus to death, after the flagellation and crucifixion, we witness a serene scene. The tender hands of the Virgin Mary hold up Jesus’ body. Her face seems to offer solace for her departed Son. Mary seems to be saying: “It’s over now. Your suffering has ended.” [Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando]
