Annone –that is, Hanno, in its anglicized form- got to Rome in the winter of 1514. He was the first elephant to set foot in the Eternal City since the fall of the Roman empire. That’, of course, made him quite popular. After all, every single Italian remembered the story of Hannibal crossing the Alps with his army of elephants to siege Rome.
