The impressive Martyrdom of Saint John the Baptist, one of the most significant works of art of the European 17th century, occupies a privileged position as the altarpiece in the co-cathedral's oratorio. It was painted by Caravaggio during his 15-month-long stay on the island. This mannerist painting is not only the largest painting Caravaggio ever produced, but is also regarded as the capolavoro (that is, the masterpiece) of his whole career.
