If your knowledge of the Old Testament is mostly confined to a handful of colorful Bible stories you learned in Sunday school, this free online course on the Old Testament offered by Yale University may be just the thing for you.
Taught by Yale religion professor Christine Hayes, the course, entitled “An Introduction to the Old Testament,” is offered on Yale Courses’ YouTube channel, and takes you through the Hebrew Bible over the course of 24 lectures. The course promises to examine the Old Testament “as an expression of the religious life and thought of ancient Israel, and a foundational document of Western civilization.”
Bear in mind, this course doesn’t claim to be anything like the Bible studies offered in your church or synagogue, but rather will take an academic approach, employing “a wide range of methodologies, including source criticism and the historical-critical school, tradition criticism, redaction criticism, and literary and canonical approaches,” according to the class description.
