Pope St. John Paul II looks on from the Palatine Hill during the Stations of the Cross (Via Crucis) ceremony in Rome on April 18, 2003. In spite of the great suffering brought on by advanced Parkinson’s disease and arthritis, he was able to hold the crucifix for the final part of the solemn ceremony marking the Passion and crucifixion of Christ.
