Now more than ever we need to embrace the gift of mercy.

As the 20th anniversary of 9/11 approaches, many people will be filled with the same emotions they felt on that late summer day two decades ago. Being under attack, the loss of thousands of lives, and the unprecedented way people came together -- these experiences are stamped in people's minds forever.

Amidst the emotional turmoil, many of us turned to God to seek refuge and comfort. In doing so we felt His overwhelming love for us, and were reminded of His ability to forgive us unconditionally, even our most serious of sins. It is this gift of mercy that we're called to emulate, even when it feels impossible.

As Christians who follow Christ's example, we ask Him to show us the way. It is for us to pray to God and acknowledge our inability to forgive, and to ask for His patience as we try our best to show mercy, just as God continually shows it to us.

It is no easy task, but these quotes from holy men and women may give you some inspiration.
