I was a young girl when my father left for Kosovo to assist policemen on a mission where he was at risk of suffering the effects of environmental pollution. When I recently read what the Carabinieri officer Fabio Cervellieri did for a little girl suffering from Type 1 diabetes (insulin-dependent) in Kosovo, I immediately thought back to my own childhood.
Who knows if Officer Cervellieri also has a daughter waiting for him while he does his work far from home, or if he knows how proud his family is of him and of the commitment he puts into his service, even when he is acting far beyond his duties.
The meeting between the carabiniere and the little girl
From the Carabinieri’s Facebook page, we learn that Officer Fabio Cervellieri, on a mission in Kosovo, met a 4-year-old girl with Type 1 diabetes mellitus during a patrol.
Cervellieri wanted to buy the electronic glucometer and insulin necessary for the girl’s treatment at his own expense, in a gesture of altruism and generosity. But he then went further: once back in Italy, he contacted the doctors of the Umberto I Hospital in Rome to arrange for the little girl to spend some time at the hospital for more complete medical treatment. It’s one of the largest hospitals in Europe, affiliated with Sapienza University of Rome, in turn one of the largest, oldest, and most prestigious European universities.
Taking up collection for the trip
The entire MSU (Multinational Specialized Unit) Regiment took an interest in the story of the little girl, and so they raised the money needed to cover the costs of the girl’s and her mother’s round trip from Kosovo to Rome, through a collection involving all the personnel.
Treatment at Umberto I Hospital
The patient, accompanied by her mother, landed in Rome on November 13. The medical team at Umberto I was thus able to attend her, perform the necessary examinations, perform minor surgery, prescribe the appropriate treatment, and discharge her.
A beautiful early Christmas present! To have your eyes open to the sufferings of others, you need to have developed a deep gratitude towards life. You must feel almost indebted yourself in order to make yourself available and help someone who won’t be able to reward you or return the favor. But perhaps the most precious prize is to witness the happiness of an entire family.
