In the Church's devotions of earlier centuries, it was customary during the final two weeks of Lent to pray for the pope.
It's easy to forget that the pope is always in need of our prayers, though our current pontiff, Pope Francis, is not afraid to specifically ask for prayers. This is a request he has repeatedly asked the flock given to him, ever since his election.
Here is an English translation of the prayer that would sometimes be added to the Mass during the last two weeks of Lent, the time known as Passiontide.
O God, the Shepherd and Ruler of all the faithful, look down favorably upon Thy servant, whom Thou hast been pleased to appoint pastor over Thy Church. Grant, we beseech Thee, that he may benefit both by word and example those over whom he is set, and thus attain unto life eternal, together with the flock committed to his care. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, who livest and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, world without end. Amen.
