Pope Francis deplored the “painful news” of the collapse of the roof of a nightclub, which left at least 184 people dead in Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) on the night of April 7 to 8, 2025.
In a telegram made public on April 10, the Pope, currently convalescing at his residence in the Vatican, said he was praying for the victims.
In the message signed by the Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin and addressed to Archbishop Francisco Ozoria Acosta of Santo Domingo, Pope Francis said he was “deeply saddened” by the disaster that struck the Jet Set nightclub, a very popular venue in the capital.
Assuring his prayers for the eternal rest of the deceased, he extended his sincere condolences to their families.
The Argentine pontiff also assured his concern and wishes for a speedy recovery to the more than 150 injured. The Pope granted the “comforting apostolic blessing, as a sign of hope in the risen Lord.”
Concert-goers were gathered to see merengue star Rubby Pérez, who is among the victims. Two former Major League Baseball players, Octavio Dotel and Tony Blanco, were also among those who died.
