Martyrs(d. 869)
Their story
+ This group of monks and male and female hermits were associated with the Abbey of Thorney in Cambridgeshire, England.
+ During the Viking invasions of England, during which numerous monasteries were destroyed, these holy men and women were killed because of their commitment to Christ.
+ Of those martyrs associated with the Abbey of Thorney, only three names have come down to us: the monks Tancred and Torthred and the nun or hermit Tova.
For prayer and reflection
“Come, you blessed of my Father; receive the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world, alleluia.”—Entrance Antiphon for the Mass of Several Martyrs (during the Easter Season); cf. Matthew 25:34
Spiritual bonus
On this day we also remember the Daughter of Charity Blessed Marguerite Rutan. One of the many who were died because of their fidelity to the Catholic Faith during the persecutions of the French Revolution, she was beatified in 2011.
Prayer
Almighty ever-living God,
who gave us the Paschal Mystery
in the covenant you established
for reconciling the human race,
so dispose our minds, we pray,
that what we celebrate by professing the faith
we may express in deeds.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever. Amen.
