MARIA MADDALENA MARTINENGO

Capuchin Poor Clare Nun (1687-1737)

Her life

+ Mary was born to a noble family in Brescia, Italy. Raised by her father (her mother died when Mary was only five months old), she was a deeply religious child.

+ At the age of 18 she joined the Capuchin Poor Clares in the convent of Santa Maria della Neve in Brescia.

+ Following her religious profession in 1706, Sister Mary Magdalen spent the remainder of her life within the convent, serving the community as prioress and, later, as novice mistress. She was known for her spirit of prayer and especially for her devotion to the Passion of Christ, which she actively promoted.

+ Blessed Mary Magdalen died in 1737 and was beatified in 1900.

For reflection

Jesus died outside the gate, to sanctify the people by his own blood. Let us go to him outside the camp, bearing the insult which he bore. For here we have no lasting city; we are seeking one which is to come.”—Hebrews 13:12-14

Prayer

O God, by whose gift Blessed Mary Magdalen persevered in imitating Christ, poor and lowly, grant us through her intercession that, faithfully walking in our vocation, we may reach the perfection you have set before us in your Son. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
