Martyr (d. 1583)

His Life

+ Little is known about the early life of John Slade. While some sources relate that he was born in Dorset (England), others state that he was born in Milton, Hampshire. We do know that he studied at New College, Oxford, and then worked as a school teacher.

+ During the English Reformation, as Queen Elizabeth was seeking to consolidate royal authority and enforce the status of the Church of England as the officially recognized church,

+ John publicly supported the “Old Religion” (i.e. the Catholic Faith) and was arrested on the charge that he was denying the royal supremacy. He was tried with another martyr, Blessed John Bodey, in Winchester in April 1583. Both men were found guilty and were condemned to be hanged, drawn, and quartered. Curiously, the two men were re-tried four months later, but the same verdict was reached and John Slade was executed on October 30, 1583.

+ Blessed John Slade was beatified with other English martyrs in 1929.

For prayer and reflection

I have fought the good fight,

I have run the race to the finish,

I have kept the faith;

now a crown of holiness awaits me.”—2 Timothy 4:7-8

Spiritual bonus

On this day we also remember Saint Egelnoth “the Good.” A monk of Glastonbury Abbey, he was named archbishop of Canterbury in 1020. He died in 1038 and was honored as a saint immediately after his death.

Prayer

Almighty and merciful God, who brought your Martyr blessed John to overcome the torments of his passion, grant that we, who celebrate the day of his triumph, may remain invincible under your protection against the snares of the enemy. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
