Saint Marie-Eugénie de Jésus

Foundress of the Sisters of the Assumption

Her life

+ Born in Metz, France, Eugénie Milleret was raised in a family with no faith, although she did receive first Holy Communion on Christmas 1829.

+ As a young woman, she had a conversion experience and felt called to religious life after hearing the Lenten sermons of the Dominican priest Henri Lacordaire in Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

+ Although she with Visitation nuns for a brief time, she did not make vows as a religious. During a pilgrimage in 1825, she felt called to establish a teaching institute.

+ In 1839, she founded a congregation that came to be known as the Congregation of the Assumption. The community in 1888.

+ Saint Marie-Eugénie died on March 10, 1898, and was canonized in 2007.
