The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. – Psalm 19:1

A photographer and a film maker  — Snorri Þór Tryggvason and Sævar Helgi Bragason — from the Icelandic astronomy website Stjörnufræðivefurinn recently managed to capture an incredible spectacle in the sky from their capital city.

The northern lights enthusiasts spend two days at 16 different locations around Reykjavík, filming the incredible light show. It was very unusual for this time of the year, but clear skies allowed the spectacle possible to be seen and filmed.

City officials turned off all street lights one night to help create conditions for viewing. Many people took to the streets to gaze up at the sky, waiting for it to light up, and they were not disappointed.

What’s unusual about this short film is that it was shot in real time and shows the actual speed of the northern lights, which Iceland Magazine reports “were so strong these nights that it was even possible to use smartphones to capture decent images of the lights.”
