The Little Sisters of the Poor of Jeanne Jugan Residence in Washington, D.C., and their elderly residents celebrated the first World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly during three days July 24-26.
After the long months of COVID isolation, the greatest desire for this weekend was to create a relaxed but festive ambiance where the elderly could visit with their families and friends. Loved ones were invited to visit Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Several playful photo backdrops offered the residents and their guests a family photo op. On Sunday afternoon a local musician got everyone singing and more than a few people up on their feet dancing.
On Monday, July 26, the Little Sisters and residents were happy to celebrate with our staff, thanking them for being our angels throughout the difficult months of the pandemic. The residents put on a talent show and then everyone enjoyed a catered Ben and Jerry’s ice cream party, a real treat.
Prior to the July 25 Day for Grandparents and the Elderly our residents had studied the meaning of old age in the Bible and Pope Francis’ message for the Day, whose theme is “I am with you always.”
