We ask for God's mercy and consolation for the deceased, those who mourn them, and all involved in the crash and response to it.

As rescue teams continue their work in the Potomac River near Washington, DC, after a military helicopter crashed into a commercial airplane late January 29, we turn to God in prayer.

Sixty-four people were on the plane, which was about to land at Reagan National Airport in Washington, DC, after a flight from Wichita, Kansas. Three soldiers were aboard the helicopter.

The bishop of Wichita, Carl Kemme, posted his assurance of prayers just after the crash occurred.

The tragedy comes as the United States is beginning a new presidential administration, with new leadership in the positions of both transportation secretary and defense secretary.

A number of figure skaters and coaches were on the plane after a camp in Wichita. No survivors have been found yet.

We invite you to pray with us: The consoling petitions of the Divine Mercy Chaplet seem a most appropriate prayer in the moment.

May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
