Here's how you can help your children navigate the popular digital platform more safely and with more discernment.

YouTube is one of those digital platforms that can be very useful, but can also be a great cause for concern. One innocent search for “funny cat videos” can somehow lead to a disturbing warren of inappropriate material.

It's not surprising that this incredible means of entertainment is highly popular, but it also requires a lot of guidance when it comes to our children. As Catholic parents, we are called to be the primary educators of our children, especially in forming their moral compass. Therefore, it's important to ensure our little ones enjoy YouTube while avoiding its pitfalls.

Here are a few suggestions to help parents and children navigate YouTube more safely, and with an approach that is in line with their family's faith:

1Set Up YouTube Kids — But Don’t Set It and Forget It

YouTube Kids is a great starting point, offering age-appropriate content and parental controls. But don’t assume that just because a video appears there, it’s automatically good. Algorithms aren’t perfect, and sometimes strange or even inappropriate videos sneak in. Regularly check what your children are watching, and remember: technology is a tool and does not have the watchful eye of a parent or babysitter!

2Use Parental Controls and Restricted Mode

For older children who use regular YouTube, Restricted Mode can help filter out inappropriate content. Additionally, creating a family account allows you to monitor watch history. Keep in mind, though, that filters are not foolproof — sometimes they block good content, and other times they let questionable stuff slip through. That’s why real-life parental oversight is key.

3Watch Together When Possible

We totally appreciate that not everyone has time to sit through 47 episodes of a talking train learning life lessons, or they're not inclined to watch the same episode of their child's favorite series for the 1,000th time. But whenever possible, watch with your kids or at least check in on their screen time. This gives you opportunities to discuss what they’re seeing, reinforce positive values, and guide them in making good choices.

4 Teach Discernment

In a world full of information (and misinformation), kids need to learn how to tell good content from bad. Encourage them to ask questions: Who made this video? Is it teaching something true? Does it reflect the values of our faith? When they hear something questionable, guide them to compare it with Scripture and Church teachings.

5Encourage Quality Content

There’s a lot of wonderful content out there that aligns with Catholic values — saint stories, faith-based animations, and educational programs that nurture virtue. Help your kids find these gems so they aren’t just watching whatever the algorithm feeds them. Channels like Catholic Kids Media, Brother Francis, and Bible-based cartoons can make faith-filled learning fun.

6Limit Screen Time Wisely

As Pope Francis reminds us, digital media should not replace real human relationships. Set boundaries around YouTube use, ensuring that it doesn’t interfere with prayer, family time, or outdoor play. A little “off-screen” balance goes a long way in raising well-rounded children.

7Pray for Guidance

As with all parenting challenges, prayer is our greatest tool. Ask for wisdom in navigating the digital world with your children. Seek the intercession of saints like St. Clare of Assisi (patron saint of television and media) to help guide your family’s media choices.

YouTube can be an amazing place for learning, laughter, and inspiration — but only when used wisely. By staying engaged, setting boundaries, and teaching discernment, we can help our children develop good digital habits that align with their Catholic faith.
