“We are giving our churches their voices back.”A diverse group of faith leaders gathered in the White House garden to witness President Trump sign an executive order, called “Promoting Free Speech and Religious Liberty,” which will allow religious organizations to speak freely about politics. This order will not nullify the Johnson Amendment, a provision in the U.S. Tax Code which prohibits tax-exempt organizations from endorsing a political candidate, but it will relax its enforcement by the IRS.
This executive order will also help religious organizations who faced scrutiny after opposing the Obamacare mandate for contraception in health care.
Before signing the bill, President Trump had this to say:
“Faith is deeply embedded into the history of our country, the spirit of our founding and the soul of our nation. We will not allow people of faith to be targeted, bullied or silenced anymore.”
