The best Christmas ad of 2018 or maybe of all time

Zelda Caldwell - published on 12/05/18

If it doesn’t bring tears to your eyes, it will have you dancing.

The bar is necessarily very high when it comes to judging Christmas ads. What could be less in keeping with the Christmas spirit than an advertising campaign designed simply to part you with your money?

For this reason the best Christmas ads do something altogether unexpected. Amidst the stress and hustle and bustle of shopping and its evil twin, concern about paying for shopping, comes a blast of joy from an unexpected quarter.

This heartwarming ad from the French telecom company Bouygues captures the bond between a father and son, from their first Christmas together through adulthood. Redbone’s catchy “Come and Get Your Love” is the soundtrack to a delightfully goofy tribute to a father’s love, which, come to think of it, is really what Christmas is all about.

Everything else will turn out to be unimportant and inessential except for this: father, child, love. And then, looking at the simplest things, all of us will say: “Could we not have learned this long ago? Has this not always been embedded at the bottom of everything that is?” — St. Pope John Paul II, “Reflections on Fatherhood”

Enjoy!
