Michelle Lussier wants those in need to be shown the dignity and respect they deserve.

When Michelle Lussier, the general manager of Little Caesar’s in Fargo, North Dakota, noticed people were going through her restaurant’s dumpsters to look for leftovers, she decided to address the matter in a pretty unexpected manner. She posted a sign on the window of the drive-thru welcoming those who’d been searching for food to come in to the restaurant for pizza and a glass of water on the house.

The sign simply said:

“To the person going through our trash for their next meal, you’re a human being and worth more than a meal from a dumpster. Please come in during operating hours for a couple slices of hot pizza and a cup of water at no charge. No questions asked.”

In a move that offers dignity and respect to those going through hard times, Lussier wants people to feel welcome, and not embarrassed by their situation. But the manager went further by making the plight of the homeless in the neighborhood a project for the restaurant. As the video below shows, with a donation box by the cash desk, customers are encouraged to give a little change to help the “800+ homeless” in the area. The restaurant also brings leftovers to the local food pantry. Lussier’s compassion and empathy, and a tasty slice of pizza, are the perfect charitable combination!
