Be inspired by this great carpenter if you’re ready to take your home decorating a step further. It seems like you can’t turn on the TV or scroll social media these days without running into some sort of home improvement project. Whether it’s a TV show about major renovation projects, or an Instagram influencer sharing an “easy DIY!,” the urge to improve our lives through beautifying our homes is everywhere.

No doubt the pandemic has increased this trend, as we’ve been home much more than usual. Rearranging furniture and redecorating rooms is a natural tendency when you’re in your home all the time, especially if you’ve had to find creative new uses of your space for virtual learning or working from home.

Before starting a DIY project at home, you might want to seek the intercession of St. Joseph. The patron of fathers, of workers, of families, of house sellers and buyers, and of craftsmen and engineers, St. Joseph was known to be a “carpenter,” or skilled artisan, as Scripture tells us.

Pope Francis has declared this beloved saint patron of this year, calling all of us to learn from his example of quiet holiness in the heart of his home. Undertaking a carpentry project is a meaningful way to grow closer to St. Joseph through learning about his profession.

If you’d like to take your DIY skills a step further and dive into the world of carpentry, it helps to have mastered some basic but indispensable skills. Aleteia spoke to Frank Barber, who has been a full-time carpenter for 34 years, to learn these 5 essential carpentry skills to master for home DIYs.
