1Irish potato soup for St. Brigid’s Day on February 1
In Ireland, February 1 marks the beginning of spring and the celebration of “Lá Fhéile Bríde,” St Brigid's Day. This feast day of one of Ireland's patron saints has been a public holiday in Ireland since 2023.
Traditionally, this day, known as Imbolc in the Irish calendar, marks the beginning of spring. Brigid's feast day is closely associated with dairy and agricultural themes, so a celebratory feast would include dishes like colcannon (mashed potatoes with cabbage) and dairy products such as milk, butter, cream, and cheese.
Featuring butter, milk, cheese, and, of course, potatoes, this Slow Cooker Irish Potato Soup is very fitting for the occasion. Start it in the morning and come home to its comforting warmth.
2Crepes for Candlemas on February 2
Did you know that crepes are a traditional food for the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord? I didn’t until recently, but how cool is that?
The reasoning is that traditionally candles are blessed at Mass on this day, honoring the proclamation that Jesus is the light of the world. Rolled crepes kind of look like candles, so they became associated with this feast called Candlemas. Crepes are so traditional on Candlesmas in France that it’s called “Jour de Crepes” or the “day of crepes.”
Here is a basic crepe recipe that’s endlessly riffable. Fill it with berries and top with whipped cream or fill with sauteed mushrooms and top with gravy. Crepes are the ultimate meal chameleon with endless variations. Bon appetit!
3Sudanese Beef Stew for St. Josephine Bakhita’s Day on February 8
I love an excuse to try a new recipe, especially one that introduces my family to a cuisine from around the world. Not being familiar with the cuisine of Sudan where St. Josephine Bakhita was born, I did a little research and found that stews are very popular. Nothing sounds better for a chilly winter day!
Here is a recipe for a Sudanese beef stew that looks mouthwateringly good! Serve over rice or flatbread. We recommend this traditional Sudanese flat bread on the side.
