Catholic schools to offer free tuition for Harvey evacuees

The Archdiocese of San Antonio announced several Hurricane Harvey relief efforts Thursday — including 90 days of free Catholic school tuition to children of evacuees — as bucket brigades of ordinary citizens, soldiers from Camp Bullis and students loaded up five U-Haul trucks. They were headed to Corpus Christi for those whose lives have been upended by the storm. Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller also announced that the state’s bishops have asked all its parishes to hold a Holy Hour of Prayer for evacuees at 7 p.m. on Sept. 7, starting with the ringing of their church bells. He said he has asked parishes throughout the archdiocese for a special collection for evacees at all Sunday Masses. The recently shuttered St. Stephen’s Church on the city’s West Side will be reopend and used temporarily by Catholic Charities for its continued response to the crisis. J. Antonio Fernández, the agency’s president and CEO, said in addition to local donations, Catholic Charities USA has pledged $1.3 million to the state’s relief effort.
