Normally, the only things I get in the mail are bills. So this was a nice change!

Who should I see greeting me but Archbishop (and, God willing, soon-to-be saint) Fulton Sheen?

This handy little book, edited by Bert Ghezzi of Our Sunday Visitor, is a treasure trove of daily reflections by one of the great preachers of our time. Looking for a quick fix—a swig of spiritual caffeine at the start of your day? Consider these small cups of Sheen to be just the jolt to get you going.

Here’s a jump-start for the new year, for January 1:

My wish for you is that you will have a Happy New Year—but by a new year I do not mean in the sense of another…there is no happiness in adding year to year and growing older. By a new year I mean new in the sense of regenerated, rejuvenated, new-born, for there is happiness in havin glife before you, especially the Eternal Life of God.

Or try this, on humility, for August 22:

By its very nature such undue self-evaluation could be cured only by self-humiliation. That is why He, who might have been born in a palace by the Tiber as befitting His Majesty as the Son of God, chose to appear before men as a child wrapped in swaddling bands.

Each is accompanied by a brief, short prayer that is just enough to challenge the heart and prod the brain.

Check it out and order your copy here.  It’s also available on Amazon and Kindle, if you want a little Fulton-to-go. You can thank me later.

As Bert Ghezzi notes in his introduction:

I hope you hear Archbishop Sheen’s voice in this book, assuring you that your life is worth living. His message to you is that if you think right, you will live well.

We could use that message right about now, don’t you think?
