Her life

+ Eugénie was born in Yssingeaux, France. Educated by the Ursuline Sisters and the Sisters of Notre Dame, she would go on to teach catechism to the local children.

+ In 1895, she joined the Sisters of the Holy Family of the Sacred Heart, professing religious vows in 1897.

+ Assigned to work as a catechist in Aubervilliers, she worked with poor children to help prepare them for their First Communion.

+ Sister Eugénie contracted tuberculosis in 1902. Her community transferred her to Rome and, a short time later, to Belgium, but she died soon after in Liège on July 2, 1904.

+ Remembered for her love of the Blessed Virgin and her care for the children entrusted to her, Blessed Eugénie Joubert was beatified in 1994.

For prayer and reflection

Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”—Mark 10:14

Spiritual bonus

On this day, we also remember Blesseds Giovanni and Pietro Becchetti. These two brothers were Augustinian priests in Fabriano, Italy. Known as gifted scholars whose work and piety did much to enrich the Augustinian Order. Giovanni died around 1420 and Pietro pass about one year later. Devotion to these holy men was confirmed by Pope Gregory XVI in 1835.

Prayer

O God, who raised up blessed Eugénie in your Church to show others the way of salvation, grant us, by his (her) example, so to follow Christ the master, that we may come with our neighbor into your presence. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
