Today marks World Autism Awareness Day -- an occasion that celebrates those with autism, and shines a light on what it means to be on its spectrum. While we seem to hear more about the neurodevelopmental disorder -- and have a better understanding on how to assist those who might need extra help or understanding -- raising a child with autism, or any other particular additional need(s), can be extremely challenging for a parent. However, it can also be a great privilege.
There will be days when you want to cry with frustration that your child doesn't quite fit the mold and perhaps has no friends. There'll be other days when you're worn out trying to find solutions, juggle medical appointments, or just deal with the weight of constantly being the best version of yourself as you know your child will mirror every single word or action that you make.
However, there will also be days when you look at your child with nothing but admiration and love as they navigate their way through a world that can be so cruel. You'll also appreciate how a word like 'disorder' doesn't really describe what your child has: Their perceptions and understanding of the world can actually be very enlightening and rewarding. You might even come to see that what makes your child different is actually a gift.
With this whole range of emotions to contend with, it's normal for any parent to reach out for help, whether it's from a support group, medical professional, family or friends. However, you can also look to the Bible for solace, inspiration, and guidance. It's interesting, considering it was written long before any medical diagnoses like autism even existed, but as you'll see below, Scripture is the perfect guide for any parent dealing with the challenges and blessings of raising a child who needs a little extra help.
Not just a gift, but a reward
"Certainly sons are a gift from the Lord, the fruit of the womb, a reward." Psalm 127:3
This verse reminds us that children are not only blessings but also rewards from God. Embracing this perspective can transform daily challenges into opportunities to cherish the divine gift entrusted to us.
Consistent nurturing
"Train the young in the way they should go; even when old, they will not swerve from it." Proverbs 22:6
Guiding a child, especially one with additional needs, requires patience and dedication. This proverb emphasizes the lasting impact of early instruction and the importance of nurturing our children's unique paths with love and consistency.
Strength in vulnerability
"My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness." 2 Corinthians 12:9
In moments of exhaustion or doubt, this verse offers solace. It reassures us that divine grace is always available, turning our perceived weaknesses into strengths and illuminating the profound power of vulnerability.
You're not alone
"I have the strength for everything through him who empowers me." Philippians 4:13
Parenting can be overwhelming, but this passage serves as a powerful reminder that we are never alone. Through faith, we receive the strength needed to navigate each day, no matter how daunting it may seem.
Cherish the blessings
"For the Lord sets a father in honor over his children and confirms a mother’s authority over her sons. Those who honor their father atone for sins; they store up riches who respect their mother. Those who honor their father will have joy in their own children, and when they pray they are heard. Those who respect their father will live a long life; those who obey the Lord honor their mother." Sirach 3:2-6
This passage underscores the sacred role of parents and the reciprocal blessings that come from nurturing our children with wisdom and love. It highlights the profound connection between honoring our parental responsibilities and the joy and fulfillment we experience in return.
As you continue this remarkable parenting journey, let these wise words from Scripture be a source of comfort and inspiration. Remember, through the unique experiences of raising a child with additional needs, you are being sculpted into an even more compassionate and resilient person, reflecting the boundless love of God Himself.
