Inspirational athletes who have leaned on their faith to put their God-given talents into action.

Throughout the Church's history there has been a myriad of athletic popes: from Pope John Paul II who was fond of the ski slopes and soccer, to Pius XI who was a huge fan of mountaineering and believed it was the greatest exercise for both soul and body. And of course, Pope Francis was an avid soccer player in his youth. So it's not too surprising that we now have a new pope who also plays, and watches, a number of sports.

And with sport very much in mind -- with the Jubilee of Sport this weekend that will adopt a "momentum of hope" -- we thought we'd look to others who inspire with their God-given athletic talents, and their devout faith.

The professional athletes featured below may have a powerful throw or an accurate kick, but interestingly, they also believe their Catholic faith has been paramount in making them the champions they are today.

Although many have experienced traumatic moments in their career -- injury, addiction, personal loss, or self-doubt -- they've managed to lean on their faith and grow in strength physically, and more importantly, spiritually.
