Day 30 intention: For the Church

For today's Rosary Relay, our penultimate day, we return to Italy, to one of the Marian shrines with a most remarkable history, even beyond that of the famous volcano of Mt. Vesuvius that destroyed the city.

The shrine dates back to St. Bartolo Longo, who was baptized Catholic but became a great enemy of the Church, getting involved with witchcraft and satanism.

On May 8, there is a widespread devotion to Our Lady of Pompeii, and a special "supplica" is prayed.

See images of the shrine and the city of Pompeii below.

The destruction caused by Vesuvius in the year 79 was so sudden that when the town was dug out by archaeologists in the 19th century, the excavation revealed a snapshot of ancient Roman life frozen in time.

Visitors to Pompeii can walk the ancient Roman streets and marvel at excavated buildings preserved by the lava flow to seem almost the way they were two millennia ago.
